Jessie James - CountryMusicRocks.net

Country newcomer Jessie James is gearing up to make an impact in country music with her hot new single “When You Say My Name”.  Signed with Toby Keith’s label Show Dog Universal, Jessie’s new single is available on iTunes, today, January 31st. Jessie was born in Italy, but she is a southern girl at heart as she was raised in the south.  “I was born in Italy, but only lived their for a year on a military base.” Jessie tells CountryMusicRocks.net“I was pretty much raised in the south; Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia. My mom’s from Louisiana, so I definitely had a big cajun influence on me.”

Jessie took the time to chat with CountryMusicRocks.net last week & we got to know the country newcomer and learned that she became involved with music at a very young age.  “Honestly [music] came very natural, it wasn’t pushed on me.  I don’t know how to explain it, it was just something that was in me. I just started singing when I was really young and started performing when I was 9.  I asked for a guitar and just started writing and it was very simple, it just happened.”

Jessie is working on a new album that is anticipated for release this year and she shared with us that Faith Hill was a big inspiration to her.  “I listened to a lot of Faith Hill for this record.  She is just such a golden girl. Her songs are so warm and she has such a good voice.  I was just  obssesed listening to her albums, and all her songs.  Definitely influenced this next record.  And Shelby Lynn as well, her songwriting is just incredible.”

Jessie previously released an album geared more for the pop genre and she indicated that it was easier for her to record this new upcoming country album.  “This [album] was way easier.  I would say it was much harder writing songs for the pop album because I was out of my element. I definitely wasn’t a pop artist or a pop writer and I wasn’t used to writing that way.  I have been going back & forth to Nashville since I was 15 and writing with songwriters there and working with country producers there, so this was much easier.  It felt like home writing for this record.”

“When You Say My Name” is Jessie’s debut country single, released to iTunes today, and she gave us a little insight into her first single. “This is actually one of the few that I did not write for this record.  Mark Wright sent it to me, one of the only songs he sent to me.  He really liked a lot of the ones I had already chosen and written. When I heard it, I just thought it was awesome & it would perfect for me.  It sounded kinda like “This Kiss” by Faith Hill, and a little bit of Shania, so  I just knew it would be perfect for me. We decided to chose this song because it was just fun.  It would be coming out during the spring/summer and it’s just the kind of song you want to roll down the windows of the car and sing along.  And I figured all the girls would like this one.”

Coming off the success of his Fall 2011 tour with Darius Rucker and his chart-topping single, “Take A Back Road,” Rodney Atkins will be playing a FREE show at Dallas Cowboys Stadium before the Sunday night match-up between the Cowboys and Giants for a very special cause—to honor America’s heroes as part of The Crown Royal Heroes Project.

Rodney, along with Crown Royal and former NFL star Warrick Dunn, will be hosting a care package stuffing event and free concert to benefit our military servicemen and women serving overseas, as well as Texas Volunteer Firefighters who have been working hard this year to keep everyone safe from the worst wildfire season in the state’s history.

On the field Sunday night, the Giants and Cowboys will be battling it out for a win on the gridiron. But before they take the field, Rodney Atkins, Warrick Dunn and Crown Royal are asking Dallas locals to come out to the East Plaza at Cowboys Stadium to help honor our nation’s heroes.

We got the chance to catch up with Rodney and talked to him about Crown Royal Heroes Project.  What we are doing is a Heroes project honoring not only military but everyday hereos from policeman, fireman, emergency workers, you name it. This weekend the Dallas Cowboys play the [NY] Giants and at the event we are going to have folks that are attending the game be able to show their support by stuffing special, commemorative Camo Crown Royal bags filled with everything from snacks, to gifts, to messages that people can leave and sending to the TX Military overseas.  This was the worst year in the state of Texas for wildfires. For each bag, Crown Royal is donating $10 to the Texas Wildfire Relief Fund for the volunteer Texas Firefighters and making awareness for them.  Folks that can’t attend the game can also go to Facebook.com/Crown Royal and leave messages to be sent out. It’s a way to shine the spotlight on those where the spotlight really belongs” Rodney tells CountryMusicRocks.

Even with holiday season in full gear and folks are busier than usual, Atkins still encourages folks to do what they can for those that are serving & sacrificing day after day.  “It is very important for these families & and rescue heroes from policeman, fireman, anyone that you know this is serving, there are ways to say thank you.  It is very important.  You can find ways from going to facebook.com/CrownRoyal, talk about it with your kids, be involved with care packages and keeping them in your prayers.”

Before the game on Sunday, December 11, Crown Royal, Atkins and Dunn will provide adult consumers (21 and over) the opportunity to support the military by stuffing special care packages to be sent to Dallas servicemen and women serving overseas this holiday season.

For every bag stuffed, Crown Royal will donate $10 to The Texas Wildfire Relief Fund, a non-profit organization committed to generating awareness and garnering support for Texas volunteer firefighters.

The event is part of the Crown Royal Heroes Project—an on-going commitment from the whisky brand to recognize, honor and give back to America’s finest, including police officers, fire fighters, military personnel and more.

At the bag-stuffing event, country music artist Rodney Atkins will be performing a special FREE concert to honor Dallas heroes—fans are encouraged to stop by and help stuff a care package—then enjoy the live performance!

Sonia Leigh launched her debut country album, 1978 December, last month on Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Artists label.  Since Sonia’s release she has been featured on CMT Listen Up for the month of October, featuring her hit single “My Name Is Money” along with several other tracks from her new album as well as exclusive interviews.

Prior to the release of 1978 December, we got the chance to catch up with Sonia to chat about her new release.  Sonia described her new album as having a lot of different sounds on it that are tied together with the same stream, as the album represents an eclectic collection of her writing.

The Story behind debut single “My Name Is Money”:   Sonia shared with us that she needed some new “threads” for performing and she went shopping with Zac Brown’s wife Shelley.  While shopping, Sonia started thinking about how people feel when they have money and when they don’t, the power of  it and if money could talk – what would it say.  Sonia impressively wrote “My Name Is Money” in a half an hour trying to capture the essence of the personality of money.

Selecting Songs For 1978 December: Sonia’s songwriting skills are strong and very impressive as she wrote/co-wrote all 10 songs on the album.  Sonia indicated that it was difficult choosing which songs were going to go on her debut album as she had a lot of material.  Sonia explained that she wanted people to be able to put in the cd, play it from start to finish, and love it.

Career Advice From Zac Brown:  Zac has been a big part of Sonia’s career.  Before a ZBB show recently, we chatted quickly with him about Sonia and it was more than evident how proud he is of her.  When we asked Sonia what advice Zac has given to her, she said that Zac has encouraged her to just be herself.  Sonia loves being part of the Southern Ground Artists label because it isn’t about “putting on the ritz”, its about delivering the music.

Advice To New Artists: Being a new artist, we asked Sonia what piece of advice she would give to artists who are out there trying to start their career.  Sonia’s advice is to be involved with your career and treat people with respect.  Every show is important whether there is 3 people in the crowd or thousands of people, everyone counts because you never know who they are.  If those 3 people tell 10 people about you, and those 10 people tell 10 more, you have a fanbase built off of 3 people.  Make every move count.
